70% of smartphone users in Germany have installed at least one mobility app, which can be used to call up the timetable, book tickets or rent a shared vehicle, for example. This is the result of a representative survey by Bitkom. It surveyed 1005 people in Germany.
While just under a third (29%) only use one specific app for mobility, the clear majority use several apps: 32% use two apps, 19% three apps and 15% even have four or more mobility apps installed on their smartphone. “The smartphone has long since established itself as the linchpin of mobility,” said Bitkom CEO Bernhard Rohleder. As a constant companion with location tracking, a payment function (e.g. Apple Pay or Google Pay) and methods for secure authentication, it is ideally suited for route planning, price comparison or booking journeys.
One criterion in particular is decisive for users when it comes to choosing an app: ease of use: 99% of users say that ease of use is important to them when it comes to mobility apps. Other functions include price comparisons for different routes, which play an important role for 89%. For 85%, the ability to book as many providers and means of transport as possible is key, for example via so-called super apps. In each case, 83% would like to compare the CO2 emissions for different mobility options and have as many different payment options as possible to choose from. Three quarters attach importance to being able to book all tickets or means of transport for a route in a single step on a single platform.
Mobility apps are thus increasingly becoming the standard: a survey conducted by Bitkom last year came to the conclusion that 51% of people have at least one mobility app installed on their smartphone.
About the Bitkom survey
The data is based on a survey conducted by Bitkom Research. This involved a telephone survey of 1,005 people aged 16 and over in Germany, including 915 smartphone users. The overall survey is representative. Participants in the survey were asked the following questions: “Have you installed mobility apps on your smartphone, e.g. for information about travel times, booking tickets for public transport or using sharing services?”, “How many mobility apps do you have installed on your smartphone?” and “How important are the following factors to you when using mobility apps?”.
